We live in a time where we value doing. It’s a time of go, go, go and do, do, doody do. We are taught that a successful life is a busy life. For many people, from the moment the alarm goes off, they are off to the races; rushing to get ready for work, rushing to work, working all day, rushing home, feeding the family, putting the kids to bed and then finally (hopefully!) getting to sit back and relax at the end of the day. We tend to drink caffeine in the day to wake up and keep going, we turn on the T.V. and drink alcohol to relax at the end of the day. We live for the weekend where we can finally relax (if we’re lucky!) and then it all starts over again on Monday. What a way to live!
From my point of view, we have fallen way too far into this crazy ‘doo doo’ culture. This way of living is creating all sorts of physical and mental health problems such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, chronic fatigue and high blood pressure. Our mind and body are crying out for another way of living but we ignore these signs and keep soldiering on.
For optimum health of the mind, body and emotions we require greater balance. We must take time to stop, rest, relax and be. We can’t have the inhale without with exhale. Equally we must balance action with recharging our batteries.
Although you might momentarily enjoy the traditional methods of relaxing such as watching T.V. or drinking alcohol, ultimately these are not going to make you feel better or benefit you in the long term. So what are healthy ways to rest, stop and recharge your batteries?
Healthy Ways to Rejuvenate
- Yoga, Tai Chi or QiGong – these are rejuvenating and balancing physical practices for the mind, body and emotions.
- Get out in nature – walk mindfully on your own, sit by a tree, walk bare feet on the earth, receive the natural healing energy of nature.
- Have a hot bath – soak your body in sea salt or Himalayan salt & essential oils. Turn out the lights and burn candles. Invite yourself to relax and let g0
- Meditate daily
As effective as the first 3 suggestions are, and I do recommend then as often as possible, it is not always possible to join a class, get out in nature or soak in a bath. For this reason I suggest meditation as a part of your daily routine. Meditation is something that you can fit in to your routine, if you are willing to wake up a bit earlier or turn off your computer screen for a few minutes.
What are the benefits of Meditation?
Stopping to meditate every day gives your mind and body a chance to come back into balance. There is so much information coming at us all day long as well as many challenges that are a part of life. Stopping and being with yourself is a chance to process and filter everything that has gone on in your day. As you sit and breath into where you are in the moment, your mind and body have a change to release the stress, anxiety or overwhelm that may be going on for you. This is your chance to deflate, to release built up tension and to process it all.
As we first sit in meditation, the mind is often very busy. From my point of view, this is our mind and body filtering out everything that’s been going on. Often, after some time, the mind may even begin to slow down. We then feel a sense of increased relaxation, peace and perspective.
When I first tried meditation I hated it! I had huge resistance to stopping and being. This was because I had a lot of emotional issues that I had stored away and shut off from. There is a subconscious tendency to want to avoid connecting with our feelings. It’s a coping mechanism. But if we finally make the space to stop and be with ourselves, we generally feel much, much better afterwards.
